Classic and Marque Car Racing at Scribante on Saturday the 10th of March 2007

A great turnout of different manufacturers for the first ever combined Classic and Marque car racing event at Scribante.

The competitors were:
Graham Twiss –  Anglia - Classic
Anton Ehlers – Escort MK 1 - Classic
Peter Sale – Nissan Skyline - Modified
Steven Murphy – Alfa Giulia - Classic
Sven van Straaten – Alfetta GT - Classic
Shaun McManus – Triumph Spitfire – Marque
Leon Ferreira – Cortina GT - Marque
Johan Barnard – GSM Dart - Marque
Eddie Westraat - AC Cobra - Marque
Dennis Mitchel – BMW 333i - Marque
Alwyn Kretsmann – Lotus 7 - Marque
Lytton Coomer – Porsche 911 – Marque

There were 3 events scheduled for the day, two Handicap and one scratch race to decide the overall winner. Great racing saw Steven Murphy (Alfa Giulia) with Lytton Coomer (Porsche) second and Dennis Mitchell (BMW 333i) third.  In fourth place was Alwyn Kretsmann (Lotus 7).

The following handicap race was won by Anton Ehlers (MK1 Escort) with Sven van Straaten (Alfetta GT) second and Peter Sale (Nissan Skyline) third. Shaun McManus drove to an incredible fourth place with his Triumph Spitfire.

The last race was a scratch event and saw Sven van Straaten (Alfetta GT) only just hanging in to beat Anton Ehlers with Steven Murphy in third place and Graham Twiss finishing fourth.

The overall winner had to finish all three races, with the emphasis on reliability.
First place overall was Anton Ehlers with Johan Barnard, a first time circuit racer, in a fantastic second place. In third place overall was Graham Twiss.  Fourth was Dennis Mitchell.

A notable observation was how drivers like Eddie Westraat, Alwyn Kretsmann, Dennis Mitchell, Leon Ferreira, Shaun McManus and Johan Barnard improved their initial lap times by quite substantial margins.

An overall analysis of the first race meeting augurs well for the rest of the season. It was a great event, and as quite a few prominent drivers were absent due to various reasons, the field will be bolstered even more in future events.

Last, but not least, a number of enquiries were made at the track by other interested parties, on how to join. We, as the core members, are the custodians of the club and it is our responsibility to get drivers and cars to the track. All cars will be viewed and taken into consideration by our president, Tubby Bennett, to establish if they meet the criteria of being in the “spirit” of Historic Classic and Marque cars, and his decision will be final.

Thanks to all the drivers who participated, and a special thanks to Barry Kapelus, Malcolm Uitenbogaart and Patrick Furby for their contribution to make this event so successful.

Regards
Rev Limiter
